Active Travel Ambassadors show off their entrepreneurial skills
Modeshift STARS Regional winners and National Awards finalists Applefields School in York have stepped up their game and added a shop to their Active Travel efforts.
The school are taking part in our Active Travel Ambassador (ATA) programme and have been developing their entrepreneurial skills along the way.
In true #TeamModeshift spirit, they enlisted the help of Modeshift Partner Brightwayz and purchased their Reflector Shop Starter Pack. The ATAs have set up their own high-viz shop and took on responsibility for naming and marketing the products.
With the aim of keeping active travellers safe, the shop retails a range of fluorescent, reflective products for day, dusk and night-time visibility at pocket-money prices.
Applefields are a secondary school for young people with additional needs. They have embedded classes at secondary mainstream schools in the City of York and a Post 19 provision in partnership with Askham Bryan College.
After researching names for their business, the ATA’s settled on ‘The Satel-Light Shop’, as they are a satellite hub of mainstream schools. Their strapline: ‘Satel-Light, Be Bright and Be Alright with Satel-Light.’
Active Travel Ambassador coordinator, Jason McAleese said:
‘Setting up the shop has been a learning curve, as any new business owner knows. The group are considering setting up a school online order system – as they found out very few pupils carry cash! The ATA’s have risen to the challenge and have really enjoyed working on this – as they do with all the ATA work.’
Applefields are a Modeshift STARS National Awards finalist and will be joining us for the STARS Awards event in London on 20 March.
Modeshift Active Travel Ambassador Programme
The Active Travel Ambassador (ATA) programme gives young people aged 11 upwards the confidence and skills to tackle the transport issues affecting your school.
With support from a Modeshift ATA Coordinator and school staff, the ATA teams will research and develop behaviour change campaigns, focusing on active travel and road safety.
