Active Travel Partnership for Safer School Routes
A new Modeshift Active Travel Inspector resource is underway to support safer school routes supported by Active Travel England
We’re excited to announce that Modeshift is collaborating with Active Travel England (ATE) to create a new Modeshift Active Travel Inspector resource set to launch in 2025.
This new tool will empower pupils to assess their school neighbourhoods, collecting valuable data on the availability and quality of infrastructure for walking, cycling, and wheeling to school.
Using metrics from ATE’s Area and Route Check tools and Modeshift’s Site Audit tool, Junior Inspectors will evaluate key features in their local areas that support or hinder safe and active travel.
Guided by a school staff member, pupils will identify improvement opportunities and upload their findings to the Modeshift STARS platform. Modeshift is also working closely with Living Streets , the UK charity for everyday walking, to develop the resource.
We gave delegates a taste of the resource at our recent Modeshift Convention and National Sustainable Travel Awards held in Leeds last month, where volunteers tested out the resource on the streets close to to the venue.
Once launched, the Modeshift Active Travel Inspector resource will allow schools to advocate more effectively for safer, more accessible routes, with local authorities able to review and address these needs in real time through Modeshift STARS.
Stay tuned for updates as we approach the 2025 launch!
